Our Story

Community Focussed

From humble beginnings as a summer fitness training club for the local rugby league team we have developed into one of the largest children only athletics clubs in central Auckland. We are family and community focused and encourage all athletes to participate regardless of ability. We believe all children can benefit from being involved in our club. We are always striving to improve the level of programmes offered and the amount of equipment and facilities available to the athletes.

What Happens on Tuesday Club Nights...

We offer most athletic track and field events on our club nights (Tuesdays from 5.15pm) and try and get everyone to do a run, jump & throw discipline during the evening. This varies depending on the age groups.

THE JUNIORS (3-6yrs)
The 3-6yrs do fun, skill based activities, and are run separately in their own area for safety. This does require a lot of organization and helpers/ parents are always required to make the events run smoothly. A junior programme will go as follows:

  • 5.15pm Roll Call & Notices
  • 5.30pm Start of Programme
  • 6.10pm Finish for 3-6yrs

THE SENIORS (7-14yrs)
The 7-14yrs concentrate more on the traditional events (i.e discuss,100m,high jump, 1500m, etc). These tend to be run in 30 min blocks alternating from a track event to a field event, etc. We try and get athletes from one station to another as quickly as possible so we can start the next discipline. This always requires helpers and parent to assist the station monitors taking the events and moving the age groups about - so please ask to help out! Generally the evening will pan out as follows:

  • 5.30 Roll Call & Notices
  • 5.40 Warm Up
  • 6.00pm Programme for 7+ yrs
  • 7.00pm Programme finish for 7+
  • 7.00pm Optional Distance Run

THURSDAY TRAINING (9-14yrs)
The club is fortunate to have the coaching skills and expertise of Steve Erkkila for extra training on Thursday nights. These sessions focus on improving running mechanics to increase overall speed. Steve knows exactly what it takes to achieve at the highest level of athletics. He is a former New Zealand 100m and 200m national champion  and record holder. After wearing the Silver Fern with pride, he is now dedicated to sharing his knowledge and experience to help others to achieve their personal sporting goals via Locomotion, his personal fitness and training service.

Club President Brendon O'Connor has commented that: "the key thing we notice about Steve's approach is that he makes it fun for the children, so that they work with smiles on their faces. He knows when to push them hard, he knows when to pull back and loosen it up. The children have responded with a mixture of respect and camaraderie and improved very quickly"

The training is held at Walker Park from 5:30 to 7:00pm

Athlete Support

The club is committed to supporting and rewarding its athletes who make Auckland or Regional teams, and also support athletes in attending outside events (Relay Day, Auckland Champs, Colgate Games, etc ).
