Point Chevalier athletes competed with distinction in the 31st annual North Island Colgate Games the 8th, 9th & 10th of January, with 25 athletes from the Club running , jumping and throwing against 7 to 14 year old athletes representing clubs from throughout the North Island as well top performers from Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill and Nelson.
Club President Brendon O’Connor said the Colgate Games, which featured on TV One Sport on Sunday 10th January, represent all that is good about sport, with a friendly relaxed environment combined with talented athletes striving to win or achieve personal bests. ‘To have 25 athletes from our Club was fantastic, with all the parents and siblings there in support we created a great atmosphere.’
The Club representatives won 8 medals with standout performances from Pt Chevalier Athletes including Oliver Miller winning Gold Medals in the 10 Years 100m and 200m, Maiya Christini winning Gold in the 11 years 1500m and Silver in the 800m and Ivanja Po’uhila winning Silver in the 11 years discuss and Bronze in Shot Put.
The Club was also represented by 3 x relay teams. The Boys 4 x 100 m team consisting of Seth O’Connor, Jack Pickering, Tom Searchfield and Oliver Miller won Silver. The Grade 10 Medley relay team of Natasha Gugich, Heidi Robinson, Sean Meekan, Oliver Miller and Jack Pickering also won Silver.
Brendon O’ Connor said that in many events just getting to the Finals through heats and semi’s is a wonderful achievement in this competition so to win medals is outstanding for these athletes and the Point Chevalier Amateur Athletics Club.
