Get Set Go

Get Set Go is one of Athletics NZ’s Foundation Programmes, and it forms the basis of our junior athletics approach.

We use its principles to help parents and coaches confidently teach fundamental movement skills through fun, purposeful activities. Pt Chevalier Athletics Club has adapted the programme to fit our club and focus on the core athletics skills of run, jump, and throw, with simple manuals that make it easy for any parent to lead a station.

Children build skills across three key areas:

  • Stability – balance, landing, rotation

  • Locomotor – hopping, skipping, jumping, dodging, running

  • Manipulative – catching, throwing, striking, kicking

Parent involvement

A wonderful mix of youth coaches and professional coaches support our Juniors programme. However, this age group requires hands-on parent involvement, and we rely on parents to help run and lead stations and groups each week.

Each group receives an easy-to-follow manual and weekly schedule to take the kids around the stations, so no prior experience is needed - just a willingness to join in and support the kids. If you're not able to actively help out, this programme may not be the right fit for your family.

Children in this age group must have parental supervision at all times and this is club policy. The best way for young athletes to stay engaged, learn skills, and have fun is with their grown-ups right alongside them, and we strongly encourage this.
