Senior athletics

Seniors sessions run from 5.45pm – 7.00pm. Meet at the equipment sheds (corner Neville & Walker Roads) beside the long jump pit.

Building strength, speed and technique

Our senior athletes build their skills in track and field events during our seniors nights. Our great coaches guide our seniors in a fun, team-focused environment where they can train, improve, and compete for Pt Chev Athletics Club.

Senior athletics programme structure

At the start of each club night, athletes gather behind their age-group sign for notices and to be checked off the register.

Each week, athletes rotate through three disciplines, completing all six events over a two-week cycle. As an athletics club, we focus on teaching the skills needed to train and compete under NZAA and World Athletics (IAAF) rules.

Events include

Running: 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, hurdles, 800m, 1500m, 2000m
Jumping: Long jump, high jump
Throwing: Discus, shot put

Parent involvement

To help our club nights run smoothly and safely we rely on the support of our wonderful parent community.

With around 200 children across Walker Park each Tuesday, it’s important that all athletes are adequately supervised. Please keep an eye on your child throughout the evening and lend a hand where you can.

Ways to help

Our club is run entirely by volunteers - we need parent help each week with jobs that may include:

  • Assisting with set up or pack down

  • Helping at a station (e.g., raking the long jump pit or supporting children as they wait their turn)

  • Taking a turn as an age-group manager - checking children in and helping move them between events

  • These roles are shared and rotated within each age group, and many hands truly make light work. Your support helps ensure a positive, fun, and safe athletics experience for all our kids.
